Result-Day Anxiety — What to Do the 30 Days Before & the Week After
Every year in Bangladesh, the week around board results produces a documented spike in student self-harm. This is not a metaphor — hospitals prepare for it. If you are a student waiting, or a parent, this guide is written for you. No motivational filler. Real things you can do today.
The truth nobody tells you before results
The result you get on that day will feel like the most important thing that has ever happened. It is not. In five years, you will barely remember your GPA. What you will remember is who was kind to you that week, and who wasn't. Ask any 30-year-old what their SSC/HSC grade was — most have to think for a moment. This is the truth: one number does not decide a life.
For students: the 30 days before
You cannot change the result now. What you can do: (1) Sleep 8 hours — anxiety amplifies on 5 hours. (2) Move your body 30 minutes daily — a walk counts. Exercise physically lowers cortisol. (3) Do one thing daily that is not about the result — cook, draw, play, pray. (4) Tell one person how you actually feel. Not 'I'm fine.' The real thing. Fear shared is fear halved.
For students: result day itself
Check the result somewhere quiet. Not in front of extended family. Not in a coaching center. Alone or with one trusted person. Whatever the number: sit with it for one hour before telling anyone. That hour is yours. You do not owe anyone your reaction. If the result is bad — breathe. It is a number on a page. It is not a verdict on your worth. If the result is good — breathe. It is a number on a page. It is not a promise about the future.
For parents: read this before results
Your child has been afraid for months. They have not told you how much. On result day, the first sentence out of your mouth will echo in their head for the rest of their life. Please make it a good one. Not 'kire, koto pai?' Not 'other-er chele to GPA 5 paise.' Just: 'Whatever you got, I love you. Show me when you're ready.' That sentence has saved lives. Literally.
For parents: the week after a bad result
The week after a disappointing result is a mental health emergency, not a discipline moment. Cancel the lectures. Cancel the comparisons. Cancel the 'in our time we would have…' speeches. What your child needs: presence, food, sleep, no phone-checking of who called to congratulate whose son. If you can do only one thing, do this: sit next to them, silently, for 20 minutes a day. No advice. Just presence. This alone prevents most tragedies.
Warning signs — get help immediately
If a student says 'I'm a burden,' 'you'd be better off without me,' gives away belongings, becomes suddenly calm after crying, stops eating, or won't leave their room for over 24 hours — this is an emergency. Call Kaan Pete Roi (09612-119911, free, 24/7, Bangla). Take them to a doctor the same day, not tomorrow. Do not leave them alone. This is not overreaction. This is what saves lives.
The bigger picture — what actually predicts success

Longitudinal studies of academic outcomes are consistent: standardized test results at age 16-18 correlate weakly with career satisfaction, income, and life outcomes at age 30-40. What correlates strongly: consistency of habit, willingness to keep trying after failure, and quality of one supportive relationship. Build the habit. Keep the relationship. The GPA is a starting point, never a ceiling.
