Cybersecurity gets sold to Bangladeshi students as a shortcut to a high salary. It is not a shortcut — it is a real engineering discipline with a long ladder. But it is one of the few fields where a BD student with no degree yet can reach international-standard work from a bedroom.

What the job actually is

Security work splits broadly into defensive (monitoring, incident response, hardening systems) and offensive (penetration testing, finding vulnerabilities before attackers do), plus governance and compliance work around both. In Bangladesh, the volume of entry-level demand sits in defensive and compliance roles at banks, telecoms, fintech and government-adjacent projects — even though students are drawn to the offensive side because it looks more exciting.
The prerequisites students skip

You cannot secure a system you do not understand. Before any security tool, you need: networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP), comfortable Linux command line, and one scripting language, usually Python. Students who skip these and jump straight to running tools plateau in about four months and never recover. Budget two to three months for fundamentals and treat that as part of the path, not a delay to it.
The realistic ladder

Fundamentals (2-3 months) → hands-on labs and CTF practice (3-6 months) → a specialisation such as web application security or blue-team operations (6-12 months) → first job or freelance engagements. That is 12-18 months of genuine effort for someone starting from zero, and it runs perfectly well alongside a university degree. Anyone selling you a 30-day path to a security job is selling a course, not a career.
Where to learn it from Bangladesh

The core resources are free and international: online lab platforms, CTF competitions, and open documentation. Local, practitioner-led training matters mainly for structure, mentorship and BD-specific context such as regulatory expectations at banks — independent providers like cyber.bd operate in that space, and general cohort programmes such as bootcamps.bd cover the programming and networking groundwork underneath it. Pay for structure and feedback; do not pay for content that is already free.
Ethics and the law — not optional

Practise only on systems you own or on platforms explicitly built for it. Unauthorised access to systems in Bangladesh is a criminal matter, and a student 'just testing' a college portal has ended careers before they started. Every legitimate employer in this field screens for judgement first and skill second. Build the reputation deliberately: report responsibly, document clearly, never touch what you were not invited to touch.

One hour a day, six days a week. Month one: networking and Linux. Month two: Python plus your first lab platform. Month three: web application basics. That is 90 hours — enough to know whether the field genuinely holds you or whether you liked the idea of it. Track the hour as a daily habit alongside your chapters; consistency, not intensity, is what actually gets students through the fundamentals phase.
